Why do Moterra’s Sprinter van conversions use a diesel instead of a gasoline engine?
We exclusively choose diesel for its superior fuel efficiency and the unmatched durability of Mercedes Sprinter models. All Moterra campervans are Sprinters powered by the reliable 2500 diesel engine. With proper maintenance, these engines can last well beyond 350,000 miles, offering exceptional longevity. This makes our campervans an ideal choice for extended travel and long-term adventures, providing both quality and reliability you can count on. 98% highway miles, zero technical offroading.
Mercedes did briefly offer a gasoline Sprinter van in the U.S. market, but discontinued it after the 2024 model year. The diesel has always been the workhorse of the lineup, and for good reason. Compared to gasoline, the diesel Sprinter also delivers better fuel efficiency at highway speeds and stronger low-end torque – which matters when you’re loaded with camping gear and climbing mountain passes. The diesel engine is simply the more durable and cost-effective choice.
What‘s the difference between Sprinter AWD and 4x4 – and which do Moterra’s vans have?
This question is relevant to choosing between our new and used inventory. Mercedes-Benz offered a traditional 4×4 system on Sprinter vans through the 2022 model year – a part-time, driver-selectable system with a two-speed transfer case that could be engaged when conditions called for it. Starting with the 2023 model year, Mercedes replaced it with a new AWD system: a torque-on-demand setup that operates seamlessly in the background, automatically splitting power between the front and rear axles without any input from the driver.
Our new custom builds feature the current AWD system – smoother on everyday roads and no less capable on dirt, gravel, or snow. Our pre-owned vans are 2022 and older and are equipped with the classic 4×4 system, which is now discontinued on new production and increasingly sought-after among off-road enthusiasts for its low-range gearing and manual engagement. Both systems are excellent for the mountain roads, forest routes, and unpaved campsites our guests and owners typically explore. The right choice simply comes down to your driving style and whether you prioritize seamless automation or hands-on control.
How often does Moterra service its Sprinter vans?
We adhere to Mercedes-Benz’s recommended Service A and Service B maintenance schedules, performed exclusively by authorized service centers or certified diesel mechanics. Additionally, all electrical, plumbing, and heating systems are regularly serviced to ensure optimal functionality and reliability for our rental clients. Ahead of a sale, each van undergoes a comprehensive final inspection to meet our stringent standards of luxury and dependability.
